The modern settlement of Clay County began in 1859 when the land was opened for legal occupation. In 1862 the county organization was effected and commissioners and officers were named. The city of Vermillion was founded in 1859 and incorporated in 1873. It was named for either the old Fort Vermillion or for the near-by Vermillion River. In 1862 the territorial legislature located the State University in Vermillion, but nothing was done until 1882 when Clay County voted $10,000 in bonds to construct a building on their campus. The Clay County Courthouse above was built in 1912 and house's some of the following offices at 211 West Main Street.

People whose last names begin with K and L need to renew their vehicle license tags prior to June 27, 2008. Or if you have a vehicle tag that is orange and says 6/2008 you will need to renew your vehicle tags prior to June 27, 2008. In order to renew your vehicle registration you will need one of the following documents: 1. Your title 2. The renewal card sent by Clay County. You would receive your renewal card 90 days prior to your expiration date. In order to receive a renewal card you would have had to register your vehicle in Clay County last year. 3. A license renewal certificate. If you have a lien on your vehicle you would have received a license renewal certificate from the State of South Dakota approximately 2 weeks after you orginally titled and licensed your vehicle. 4. A photo or fax copy of your title from your lienholder. 5. Last years vehicle registration and your drivers license (your name must be on the vehicle registration) ATTENTION: Those persons renewing by mail will need to send .50 cents per vehicle, motorcycle or trailer.
EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2008 SOUTH DAKOTA WILL BE CHANGING FROM IT'S CURRENT PLATE WITH VEHICLE SYSTEM TO A PLATE WITH OWNER SYSTEM. FOR MORE INFORMATION REGARDING THIS CHANGE PLEASE CONTACT OUR OFFICE AT 605-677-7123. TO PREPARE FOR THIS CHANGE ON JUNE 30, 2008 THE STATE OF SOUTH DAKOTA WILL START CONVERTING OVER 4 MILLION RECORDS. CONSEQUENTLY THIS MEANS THERE WILL BE NO MOTOR VEHICLE SERVICE AVAILABLE ON JUNE 30, 2008. WHEREAS OUR OFFICE WILL BE OPEN WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PROCESS ANY MOTOR VEHICLE/BOAT TRANSACTIONS. IF YOU HAVE ANY TYPE OF MOTOR VEHICLE TRANSACTION TO DO PLEASE DO IT ON OR BEFORE JUNE 27, 2008.
